HDD Triple Jack-Up Support Spread

Germany

HDD Triple Jack Up Support Spread

A modular HDD support spread consisting of two C-7 and one C-5 jack-up platforms, providing deck space and stable working areas for drilling support and the eventual cable pull.

HDD Suppport
Close to Shore

For a nearshore HDD project in Germany, Combifloat provided a support spread of multiple self-elevating jack-up platforms to assist the horizontal directional drilling works and the eventual cable pull. The setup combined two C-7 platforms and one C-5 platform, creating a stable offshore work area with sufficient space for drilling support equipment, handling activities and project logistics close to shore..

Multiple Jack Ups, One Spread

The project showed the value of Combifloat’s modular and scalable jack-up platform concept for HDD support operations. By combining several platforms into one coordinated spread, the contractor could keep the required equipment, materials and support functions available on site, while maintaining stable elevated working conditions in a shallow nearshore environment.

Stable Deck Space for Drilling Support

The HDD operation required a practical marine support setup that could accommodate the equipment needed for drilling support, tool handling, material storage and the later cable pull. Limited water depths close to shore made larger conventional marine assets less practical, while the works still required stable deck space, safe access and enough capacity to support several activities at the same time.

Scalable Support
During Execution

As the works developed, time pressure became an important factor. The contractor needed a solution that could be expanded quickly without changing the marine concept or disrupting the continuity of the project.

  • Shallow-water access: The low draft of the modular self-elevating platforms made them well suited for nearshore pipeline landfall works in restricted water depths.
  • Stable elevated working platform: Once jacked up, the platforms provided a stable work area for HDD drilling support, equipment handling and cable pull preparation.
  • Scalable configuration: Different platform sizes could be combined and expanded into one coordinated spread as the project requirements developed.
  • Dedicated work areas: The triple jack-up spread allowed drilling support, equipment storage, material handling and cable pull activities to be organised across multiple platforms.
  • Class-approved equipment: The supplied units were delivered with Bureau Veritas class approval, supporting operation in German waters.

Room for Equipment
And Cable Pull Preparation

Combifloat initially supplied a C-7 self-elevating jack-up platform equipped with four 35-metre spud legs to support the HDD operation. During planning, a C-5 platform was added to create extra deck space and dedicated support areas for equipment, materials and activities around the drilling spread.

Flexible Nearshore Work Platform

When the execution schedule intensified, additional working capacity was required within a limited timeframe. Thanks to Combifloat’s modular platform system and the availability of suitable equipment from the rental fleet, a second C-7 platform was mobilised and integrated into the spread on short notice.

The final HDD support setup consisted of two C-7 platforms and one C-5 platform working together as one integrated jack-up spread. This created the required space and stability to keep key support equipment on board and assist the drilling operation towards the eventual cable pull.

Completed
Triple Jack Up Spread

The completed triple jack-up spread provided a stable and efficient working environment for the HDD drilling support works and the later cable pull. By combining two C-7 platforms and one C-5 platform, the contractor gained additional deck space, improved operational flexibility and dedicated work areas for the different stages of the nearshore operation.

The project demonstrates the strength of Combifloat’s modular self-elevating jack-up platforms for HDD support, cable landfall and nearshore marine construction projects where shallow-water access, stable elevated working conditions and scalable capacity are important to project execution. The ability to expand the spread during the project helped the contractor respond to changing operational and schedule requirements while maintaining continuity on site.

Proven
Performance & Compliance

The Combifloat pontoons offer full customization and can be equipped with many attachments and accessories specifically needed to successfully execute projects. The C-5 series are often used for geotechnical services and inland marine construction works and offer a 15 T/m2 deck strength just like the C-7 and C-9.5 series. All C-5 series components are fully IACS compliant and delivered with individual test certificates.
