Cable-Lay Challenge

In a remote inland water location in Scandinavia, Combifloat supported a specialist marine cable installation contractor with the installation of high-voltage subsea power cables across water depths exceeding 200 metres. The landlocked project site was accessible only by road, which made the use of a conventional cable-lay vessel impractical.

The Challenge:

The project required the installation of heavy subsea cables, with a cable reel weighing approximately 150 tonnes, in a confined inland water environment. Deep water, steep shorelines, limited site access and logistical restrictions all placed high demands on the installation method and project execution.

Controlled Positioning

The modular barge was operated with controlled movement along the planned cable route, supporting accurate cable placement in deep water.

Road-transportable deployment

The modular components were transported by road and assembled on site, enabling heavy cable installation in a remote inland location.

High deck load capacity

The C-7 provides a compact but stable working platform for the equipment while handling significant (point) loads. Combifloat’s pontoons have the highest deckload amongst its peers. (20 t/m2)

The Combifloat Solution
A Road-Transportable Cable-Lay Barge

Combifloat supplied a C-7 series modular barge of approx 45 x 16 m, assembled directly at the lakeshore. The platform was engineered and configured to support a large cable reel, tensioner and ROV launch frame, providing a stable working base for deep-water cable installation. Using a controlled mooring and thruster arrangement, the platform could move progressively along the planned cable route while maintaining the positioning accuracy required for the installation. Because the system is fully modular, all components could be transported by road and assembled on site, which was essential for this remote, landlocked project location.

Project Outcome

The cable installation was completed safely, efficiently and on schedule, demonstrating the value of Combifloat’s modular platform systems in challenging inland water environments. By avoiding the need for a dedicated cable-lay vessel, the solution provided a cost-effective and adaptable work platform while still meeting the positioning and load-handling requirements of the cable installation. The project shows how Combifloat systems can be rapidly configured for complex marine operations in locations where conventional vessels are not a practical option.
